I do t know who you spoke with, VA has no credit requirement. It is only the bank that requires. Most want to see just as you said a 620-650 min score. However I have a VA Home loan and received it with a 540 credit score and I did work part time, however my income was over 75% VA disability and GI bill benefits when I was approved. I’d look into it farther if I were you. It is possible.

I just got a 100% financing of my home with a 620 credit score with LOAN DEPOT at a 2.5% interest, no PMI, no down payment.
